Lucius Aelius, proconsul of Pannonia and father of Lucius Verus, was appointed as successor by Hadrian, but died before Hadrian, and therefore did not succeed him. (Historia Augusta). This head is incorrectly identified as Aelius Verus in the Vatican Museum.
