Baths of Diocletian The Baths of Diocletian were dedicated in 306 CE, and were the largest of the imperial baths. They were in use until 537 CE, when the aqueducts that fed them were damaged during an invasion of the Goths.
The baths closely resembled the Baths of Caracalla in size and plan. The present day Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, designed by Michelangelo (and later by Vanvitelli), was commissioned in 1561 by
Pope Pius IV Medici. Vanvitelli's reconstruction began in 1749.
